White Teeth: In Samad's flashback we see his wedding. From Bangladesh, Samad was betrothed to Alsana. When they finally meet on their wedding day she is submissive, pleasing Samad. This is until a drunken man calls out a racist comment. They have twins together despite this. Samid wants to raise them as good Muslims, but this isn't helped by his passionate love affair with their school teacher Poppy Burt-Jones. To be sure at least one of the twins is raised as he wishes, Samad sends Magid to be kidnapped and flown back to Bangladesh. Aslana has no idea.
