The Western States Endurance Run is an ultra-marathon which starts near Squaw Valley, California and winds 100 miles through the Sierra Nevada mountains along an old gold miners path. Qualifying racers only get one day to finish. No stopping. No sleeping. Just a pair of trail running shoes and the ability to ignore an unbelievable amount of pain. Competitors face 106 degree heat, 18,000 feet of elevation gain, and the dangers of running in the dead of night with small pins of light. That's like running over Mount McKinley with blinders on.
